Plastic bags are widely used in the food industry and are required to meet USDA and FDA specifications if used for packaging food. Printing and inks used on the outside of a bread food bag or poly bag are not an issue as long as there is no direct contact. A company could have their name, logo and coding printed on the outside of the bag, and as long as the contents of the bag do not come into direct contact with the printing or ink, then the virgin polyethylene material would be considered food safe. Plastic bags although not bio-degradable are recyclable. There are curb side programs and drop offs in many convenient locations to recycle poly bags and plastics. Poly bags have been a probable choice over paper because of their strength which in some cases can hold up to 1,500 times their own weight. They also use 60% less energy to manufacturer than paper bags, and produce about half of the emissions. Plastic poly is extremely efficient for packaging produce and other products and can be an economical and ideal choice for packaging a multitude of various products.
